In attempt the end the stalemate, Germany launched an attack against the Allied line in Belgium. This attack is very significant as it brought in the new use of poison gas, where they were thrown in the trenches of the enemies to poison them or cause panic. During this time, the first type of poison gas, chlorine, was used. The estimated causalities of the first attack were around 1500, in which 200 were killed. The use of such technology of gas cause panic among the Allied lines, causing them to build a 7km wide gap, which the Germans began to advance. However, they were halted before reaching the key city of Ypres. Although the territory gain was minimal, the causalities were wide, with 69,000 for the Allied, and 38,000 for the Germans.
