Theodore Roosevelt came to office after President McKinley was assassinated. He was the leader of the rough riders during the Spanish American War, was governor of New York, believed the government should assume control whenever states proved incapable of dealing with problems, created the Square Deal for the common people, supported the Sherman Anti-trust Act, and sought federal regulation, helped pass the Meat Inspection Act, Pure Food and Drug Act, and was a big preservationist and conservatism of the environment and natural resousrces.
