A series of nonviolent protests at Woolworth department stores in Greensboro, North Carolina where blacks sat at lunch counters that only served whites. It started with four students and spread throughout the South, with mainly college students participating. They were important because they were a test of the nonviolence tactic. In addition, the Sit-Ins set into motion the creation of the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee (SNCC).
