WWI, also known as the Great War, began when Archduke Franz Ferdinand, crown prince of Austria, was assassinated by a Serbian man named Gavrilo Princip. This caused Austria to declare war on Serbia, and because both nations had signed treaties with other countries there was a domino effect. Countries all over the world were pulled into the war by a complex web of alliances and were on one of two sides: the central powers which sided with Austria-Hungary, and the Allies which sided with Serbia. WWI is known for its trench warfare because of the new threat machine guns had introduced. America, intent on staying neutral at first, finally joined the war when Germany made a pact with Mexico in exchange for their aid in retaking Texas, Arizona, and New Mexico. On June 28th 1919, the treaty of Versailles was signed which created peace between Germany and the Allies, Forced Germany to pay for the damages done during WWI, and founded the League of Nations.
