Also an elector of Saxony.

Elected after the death of Jan III Sobieski. These were the first Polish elections where foreign forces intervened. Augustus entered Poland followed by an army to force a favourable result.

Although intelligent educated and ambitious, he turned out not to be a great ruler. He wanted to introduce absolute monarchy in the country, but underestimated the opposition to this idea.

Formally dethroned in 1704 by a magnate confederation, which he didn't accept until 1706, when he was forced to do so by the king of Sweden who was winning in the Great Northern War.

Eventually, after a brief interregnum and reign of king Stanisław Leszczyński, he was reinstated in 1709. The Silent Sejm ensured peace between the king and the nobles, putting an end to the king's ambition to create an absolute monarchy in Poland-Lithuania.
