Having left Kazvin on November 23 (December 5), the Kumsky detachment, in which Prince NN Baratov was the corps commander until December 8 (21 ), approached the village of Lalekyan on December 3 (16), to the west of which there were up to three horsemen and one hundred foot enemy. Having defeated them on December 4-5 (17-18), the Russians left part of their forces in Lalekyan and marched to Sava , who was occupied by two thousand mercenaries of the German consul. The city was taken on December 7 (20), the enemy fled to Qom.

On December 8 (21), the Russians approached Kum. Since there were revered Shiite shrines in the city, Baratov summoned representatives of the local clergy and the governor of Kumsky ostan for negotiations , with whom he agreed on the procedure for the introduction and deployment of troops [4] .

The German consul, Iranian parliamentarians and 3 thousand gendarmes fled southeast to Kashan [1] . On December 9 (22), Kolesnikov’s detachment entered Qum, thereby providing Tehran from the south. On the eve, news was received about the impending advance of the enemy detachment on the capital, and Baratov ordered the Tehran detachment to advance on Rabat Kerim [5] .
