During this time advertisers used to ask women to help work in factories whilst the soldiers were out fighting the war. This is a prime example of the patronising and condescending compliments they received. "Turns out you gals are useful after all!" this quote from one of the advertisements suggests that it's a shock that women are good at something even if it is just working in a factory.
