Morphine was used in World War II as a pain killer. After the invention of the hypodermic syringe, morphine injections was an essential for patients undergoing surgery. However, injecting morphine into the blood proved to be more addictive than smoking or eating opium. What Squibb introduced was called synthetic morphine, which was like a tube of miniature toothpaste that contained morphine. [8]
