Importance of Manchuria
- It was a mineral rich area that could supply Japan with the resources needed for its industrialisation

- It was a large area that could accommodate Japans growing population

- It was a buffer area against Russia

Result of War
- Japan gained control of Korea, south Manchuria, and Manchurian railway rights (guarded by the Kwantung army) (see Mukden incident)

- Respect for Japan was gained from the West

- Japan became a role model for other Eastern states
