Largest Race Riot Held (11 agos 1965 año – 17 agos 1965 año)

Descripción:

In July 1964, a large race riot took place in New York, just 2 weeks after the signing of the Civil Rights Act
This shows that there was still much unhappiness within African American communities, as people realised that laws alone would not bring about equality
Over the next 4 years, there were 329 major riots in 257 American cities
Over 200 people were killed, thousands were injured, tens of thousands were arrested, and property and goods worth billions of dollars were damaged
THE LARGEST RACE RIOT
The largest riot was in the Watts district of Los Angeles between 11th - 17th August 1965
Marquette Frye was arrested on suspicion of drink-driving by two police officers
He resisted arrest and rumours spread that the police had attacked his mother and pregnant girlfriend
Violent protests broke out, where over 14,000 California National Guard troops enforced a curfew zone of approximately 70km to try and restore order
After 6 days, 34 people had died, over 1,000 were injured, 4,000 were arrested and hundreds of shops, businesses and homes had been badly damaged
