China remained self-sufficient until Europe wanted to become trading partners and create favorable trade. The British established tea trading market which China controlled. The English used opium to balance trade market. The Chinese became addicted to opium which led to England profiting. This led to Opium Wars. The Chinese are defeated and England gets Hong Kong. The Chinese attempted reform but mediocre military couldn’t prevent foreign nations from getting a foothold in China. The Open Door Policy was established making open doors into China for U.S. and other nations.
