Conflict had worsened with the polarisation of politics during the Spanish Second Republic from 1931-1936. This sharp divisions came mostly in response to events in Spain but also in reaction to the radicalisation of European politics. It was the intransigence of the right and the military which was at the heart of the causes of the Civil War.
