This era started when using steam engines like began to be used during the Industrial Revolution, mainly to pump water from mines. Steams used as a large-scale power source for a number of uses was the invention of Scottish engineer, James Watt. Steam engines need fuel to heat the water and convert it to steam, and wood wasn't good enough to become the fuel of the Industrial Revolution. Coal was used to replace, that was partially widespread in the North of England, the heart of the Industrial revolution, that would start the early British industry. The consumption of coal in Britain tripled during this time, marking the fossil fuel era to the present.
