Nelson Mandela was one of the founders of “Umkhonto we Sizwe” the military group of ANC. The group's name is Xhosa for "Spear of the Nation." After he was put in prison he not only became a national symbol, but the whole world saw him as an inspiration. This made more people support his anti-apartheid cause.
