Eight princes teamed up to form a defensive alliance against the Church. These Protestants protected each other, and vowed to fight for the Word of God. The empire was being divided in half because of religion: Protestants vs. Catholics. In the Schmalkadic Wars, the emperor defeated the Protestants.
