Martin Luther (10 nov 1483 año – 18 feb 1546 año)

Descripción:

Martin Luther's idea of salvation was very different from that of the traditional teachings of the church, and he was motivated to confront church officials in the "Indulgence Controversy." Martin Luther did not support the use of indulgences, which were things that you buy from the church to shorten your time in purgatory and get you into heaven faster. Martin Luther was adamantly against the use of these, saying that it would actually lead to eternal damnation, and represented the greed of the church. He issued his Ninety-Five Theses, which were in response to these indulgences, and nailed them to a church door in Wittenberg. Thousands of copies were spread throughout Germany, and word spread of Luther and his ideas. They were received well.

Martin Luther enjoyed broad appeal and support in Northern Germany because the nobles and princes didn't like the amount of land that the church had, and also didn't like the tithe. Luther appealed to the Germans nationally, because if they were to break from the Catholic church, they could be a religious ruler and gain more power, and also recover confiscated church land. He was incredibly dependent on the rulers and their support.
