Iran was internationally isolated due to their hostage-taking, and Saddam Hussein invaded Iran. The international community didn't help Iran as western countries wanted Khomeini out of power, leading to a lingering feeling of mistrust and isolation. The war ended through a ceasefire brokered by the UN.
