With the Soviets dissatisfied over how Berlin was partitioned, they began a blockade of West Berlin with the hopes that they could starve the Western powers out of Berlin. In fear of losing the war against communism in Europe, Truman announced that the western Allies would stay. Instead of fighting back using military measures, however, the Allies looked to pull off the impossible: indefinitely supplying a city by air alone. This is why at one minute after midnight on May 12, 1949, the Soviet blockade of Berlin was lifted. This dispute of ideologies contributed to tensions.
