Hernán Cortés was a Spaniard who led the expedition to México to conquer the Aztecs. He and his Spanish Conquistadors carried out the conquest of the Aztecs from 1519-1521, in which they defeated Moctezuma II, the ruler of the Aztecs, and took control of the Aztec Empire.
