Reformation or the Protestant Reformation was a revolutionary period of time started by religious intellectuals such as Martin Luther who believed the church to be corrupt in their dealings and wrong in their teachings. The Reformation was a spread of ideas the sparked a distrust of the Roman Catholic Church in the eyes of many common people in Europe.
The Reformation contributed to classical liberalism by promoting aspects of individual rights and freedoms such as freedom of religion. As intellectuals and scholars began to openly question the religious teachings of the church, many common people started to share their sentiments and new reformed churches started to arise against the will of the church. Many rulers and people of power in Europe at the time sought to gain power against the Papacy by allowing and even encouraging the spread of these new ideas of religious freedom. This spread of distrust in regards to the Roman Catholic Church would pave the way for The Age of Enlightenment in the years to come.
