Construction of the Panama Canal began in 1881 by the French. However, due to the high financial costs and deaths of workers from disease, the construction had to stop. It wasn't until 1904 that the Panama Canal was purchased by the United States for $40 million. Construction resumed and the Panama Canal had it's the first ship go through it in 1914. Officially opening the Panama Canal, and making it a milestone in history for travel by boat.
The Panama Canal was finally given back to the country of Panama in 1999 after 118 years of being in possession of France and then the United States.
