work with Indigenous
groups.

no to fish farms in
their areas. This leads to a
decision to phase
out farms in some regions

government didn’t properly consult Indigenous groups

Fish farming grows four times larger in 20
years. It makes up 20% of Canada’s fish
production and one-third of its value. In 2009,
the Cohen Commission investigates
why sockeye salmon in the Fraser River
have been declining for 18 years. They suggest
stopping fish farming in the Discovery Islands
and changing how the government promotes
and regulates fish farming.The Prime Minister asks the Minister of Fisheries to start phasing out ocean-based fish farms by 2025 and look for more sustainable options, like land-based fish farmingThe fish farms are expected to rise out of the ocean and water; Fish farms to be on land by this timeThe Canadian government’s new 2029 deadline may just be an empty promise, following its earlier, unfulfilled commitment to remove open-net pen salmon farms by 2025.
