The Carthaginians gained some land that they lost during the second Punic war and then Rome attacked them and defeated them and destroyed their city.
Hannibal led troops across Spain and over the Alps to Italy and captured a large part of Italy but not Rome. Roman forces eventually drove the Carthaginian forces back and they retreated to North Africa. A Roman general, Scipio, defeated Hannibal which forced Carthage to end the war.
Rome used their powerful navy to win control of islands to gain control of important shipping lanes and they defeated them.
Rome gained control of the islands of Sicily, Sardinia, and Corsica.
Rome gained control of what is modern-day Spain and several of the Mediterranean islands.
All of its former territory in North Africa became part of the Roman Empire.
