October 10, 1837 Robert Gould Shaw is Born
May 30, 1854 Congress passes the Kansas-Nebraska Act.
November 6, 1860 Abraham Lincoln is elected President.
February 8, 1861 Confederacy is formed.
April 12, 1861 Confederates fire on Fort Sumter and the Civil War begins.
July 1-3, 1863 The battle of Gettysburg takes place.
April 12, 1846 The Mexican American War begins.
1846 Robert Shaw's family moves to Staten Island and he is enrolled into St. Johns college.
1851 The Shaw family moves to Europe and Robert continues his studies abroad.
1856 Robert Attends college at Harvard University.
1861 Shaw joins the 7th new York Regiment and Defends Washington.
May 11, 1861 Shaw joins the 2nd Massachusetts as a 2nd lieutenant and eventually rises to the rank of captain and takes part in the battles of Winchester, Cedar Mountain, and Antietam.
February 15, 1863 Shaw accepts an offer to command the 54th Massachusetts, one of the first all black regiments.
July 18, 1863 Shaw is killed in an assault on Batter Wagner on James Island at the age of 25.
March 4, 1837 Van Buren is inaugurated.
