Early 1970's: Groups of children and adults in Lyme, Connecticut were suffering from health complications that could not be explained.
Mid 1970's: Researchers could describe signs and symptoms and called the disease Lyme. Still unsure of the cause.
1981: Willy Burgdorfer discovered the connection between the deer tick and Lyme disease. Also discovered that the bacteria carried by ticks, spirochete, caused Lyme.
1982: Spirochete is named Borrelia burgdorferi after Willy Burgdorfer.
1987: Lyme disease became a reportable disease.
1997: First Lyme disease vaccine became available.
1998: Lyme disease was made laboratory reportable.
2001: Vaccine is withdrawn from the market by manufacturer.
2012: Lyme disease was named one of the top ten notifiable diseases by the CDC.
