Rome defeats the Greeks at the Battle of Corinth making it part of the Roman Empire. This marks the end of the Greek country and makes way for a new Empire.
Alexander begins his conquests and defeats the Persians. This allowed the greeks to expand and create a larger country.
Alexander the Great becomes king when his father, Philip of Macedon is assassinated. A new and younger King to rule Greece is an important milestone because this lets there be a new veiw on how thing are run.
The wars between Sparta and Athens begin. They are called the Peloponnesian Wars. The wars lasted 27 years with Sparta eventually conquered Athens in 404 BC. Sparta was known for its strong army and this only proved that it was superior to other Greek army's.
The Greeks fight the Persians in the Greek/Persian Wars. Two famous battles are the Battle of Marathon in 490 BC and the Battle of Salamis in 480 BC. The Greeks win and the Persians retreated. This war lasted for 50 years and allowed the Greeks to have developed better wepons.
Democracy is introduced in Athens by Cleisthenes. He establishes a constitution and is often called the "Father of Athenian Democracy". This is one of the great accomplishments of Greek culture. The greeks were the first people to ever have a democratic system and this allowed them to be a united country.
A lawyer named Draco introduces strict new laws in Athens that are punishable by death. These are called Draconian laws. These laws are the first written laws ever so this was quite important.
The Greek Tyrants come into power. Cypselus is the first Tyrant of Corinth. This makes the Greeks the first country to have a dictator.
The First Messenian War begins.This is a war between Sparta and Messenia that will last many years. The conquest of Messenia meant that Sparta grew richer and stronger, and it allowed the Spartan elite to become a class of professional warriors
The first Olympic Games took place. The games would take place every 4 years in honor of the Greek god Zeus. I think this is important because doing the highly competitive sports will let them have more hobbies than fighting.
