Catiline is killed by the Roman army after being driven out of the city by Cicero and his allies
The political scene in Rome grows violent as the populares and optimates battle each other for power. Cicero’s career is destroyed as a moderate voice of the optimates
death of Julia (Caesar’s daughter, Pompey’s wife), weakens the triumvirate and it is further damaged by Crasus’ death in battle against the Parthian Empire. Violence in the streets escalates
Senate issues a senatus consultum ultimum which empowers Pompey to force Caesar to disband his army. Instead, Caesar takes his legions toward Rome. Civil war erupts with Caesar fighting Pompey and his allies. Pompey flees to Greece and recruits a new army; Caesar becomes master of Rome
Caesar becomes dictator and begins a three year campaign in Egypt, seating Cleopatra on the throne to ensure friendly relations between Italy and Egypt
Caesar is the unchallenged head of the Roman state and accepts the title of “dictator for life”. He implements a series of reforms however by weakening the old guard’s power in the senate he causes discontent amongst the optimates, who resent his desire to be king

Caesar has all of Transalpine Gaul under his legions’ control and annexes it as a new province of Rome’s empire. He crosses the English Channel and attacks Britain.
