1872 Ulysses S. Grant declares Yellowstone the 1st National Park in the states of Wyoming, Idaho & Montana.
1903 President Theodore Roosevelt camps with Jon Muir in Yosemite and seeks to have parks placed under federal control
1906 Congress passes the Antiquities Act. This means that the president can set aside Historic Landmarks that already exist in public lands. Example: Devil's Tower in Wyoming becomes the 1st National Monument.
1916 President Woodrow Wilson creates the National Park Service with 2 goals in mind: 1. Conserve the Parks for the Future. 2. Allow the Public to enjoy them.
1933 President Franklin Delano Roosevelt consolidates the park system with Executive Order 6166. This put all Parks, Monuments, Memorials and Cemeteries into a single Park System.
1964-1965 President Lyndon B. Johnson signs the Wilderness Act-which brings parks into urban areas.
