This would remove the prospect of war with Poland if Hitler decided to make a move against Austria or Czechoslovakia.
January 1934: 10 Year non-aggression pact with Poland agreed.
Hitler's first strikes against the Versailles Settlement.
Austrian Chancellor Dollfuss murdered by Austriain Nazis. In the resulting confusion Hitler was poised to strike. But Mussolini signalled his disapproval by moving Italian troops to the Brenner Pass. Hitler backed down and denied any responsibility for the murder of Dolfuss.
January 1935: Saar plebiscite.
March 1935: Reintroduction of conscription
A direct challenge to the Allied powers, Britain, France, and Italy. Hitler announced his intention of expanding the army to 36 divisions (550 000 men) and creating a military air force. Hitler got away with it.
June 1935: Anglo-German Naval Agreement
Allowing Germany to have a fleet 35% the size of Britain's. Allowing Germany to have 45% the number of submarines of Britain. Essential legalised German naval rearmament. Made without the prior agreement of France or Italy. Promoted the abandonment of international interests to pursue selfish national interests. Encouraged Mussolini to extend Italy's colonies.
July 1934: Attempted Anschluss with Austria
A response to the reintroduction of conscription. United stand made by Britain, France, and Italy against Hitler's violations of the disarmament clauses of the Treaty of Versailles announced in March 1935. A strongly worded protest. Undermined by Britain's negotiations of the Anglo-German Naval Agreement June 1935.
Agreements made between two or more countries whereby one country promises to help another in return for a a promise of a similar kind.
March 1935: Mutual Assistance Pacts (France + Soviet Russia) (Soviet Russia + Czechoslovakia)
This took place in accordance with the Treaty of Versailles. Results showed that 90% + wanted to return to Germany. This was the first time Germany had regained lost territory and it was done legally and peacefully.
