James V, the King of Scotland, dies (14th December 1542)
Parliament makes Earl of Arran 'Second Person of the Realm and Governer' and agrees to consider marriage between Mary and Edward, as Henry VIII wants (March 1543)
The Treaty of Greenwich is signed which agrees to the marriage but promises to keep England and Scotland as separate countries (1st July 1543)
Mary crowned Queen of Scots (9th September 1543)
Scotland dismiss the Treaty of Greenwich and reaffirm the Auld Alliance between Scotland and France (11th December 1943)
Henry VIII starts sending soldiers into Scotland to destroy towns, abbeys and crops (May 1544)
Protestants murder Cardinal Beaton at St Andrews Castle (May 1545)
Henry VIII dies. His son Edward becomes King and Protector Somerset governs for him (28th January 1947)
French soldiers siege St Andrews Castle which has been occupied by the Protestants who killed Beaton, with the Earl of Arran's son as hostage. (15th July 1547)
England win the Battle of Pinkie against Scotland. Somerset leaves English soldiers in Scotland who give out Protestant writing, including the Bible, in English (10th September 1547)
Scotland and France agree to the Treaty of Haddington, meaning Mary will marry the King of France's son, France will take control of some Scottish strongholds and Arran will become the Duke of Châtelherault in France. (7th July 1548)
Mary reaches France, where she will live for many years (13th August 1548)
