Galileo - In 1625 The Italian scientist Galileo Galilei improved upon the first microscope and did the first scientific observations with it.
Robert Hooke- In 1665 Hooke discovers the honeycomb like structures in a cork slice using a compound microscope. Coined the term "cells".
Anton van Leeuwenhoek- In 1670, a Dutch biologist looks at pond water with a microscope he made lenses for.He called the organisms he found within the water “animalcules,” which means “miniature animals".
Karl Rudolphi and J.H.F. Link- In 1804, they were the first to prove that cells were independent of each other. Prior to this work, it was thought that cells shared their walls and that was how fluids were transported between them.
Robert Brown- In 1833, an English botanist, discovered the nucleus in plant cells.
Matthias Schleiden- In 1838, a German botanist proposes that all plant tissues are composed of cells, and that cells are the basic building blocks of all plants. This statement was the first part of the cell theory
Theodor Schwann- In 1839, a German botanist reached the conclusion that plants and animal tissue as well is composed of cells. He also pulled together and organized previous statement on cells into one theory, which states: that first, Cells are organisms and all organisms consist of one or more cells and second, the cell is the basic unit of life for all organisms.
Rudolph Virchow- In 1855, Virchow, a German physiologist added to the 3rd part of the cell theory. "All cells develop only from preexisting cells". He was also the first to propose that diseased cells come from healthy cells.
Hans and Zacharias Janssen- In 1590, they became known for inventing the compound optical microscope. This contributed to "The Cell Theory" by making it easier and more practical whilst observing cells.
Louis Pasteur- In 1862, Pasteur discovered that microorganisms cause fermentation and disease, created the process of pasteurization, and developed vaccines against anthrax and rabies.
