Descripción:
Washington Irving wrote Rip Van Winkle about an inspiring artist who was poor. He wasn't able to live out his dream but he also overcame some major losses. He was perceived as lazy, when really he was just overwhelmed. He had no sons, nobody to help with the manual labor around his farm. He struggled to keep up, "In fact, he declared it was no use to work on his farm; it was the most pestilent little piece of ground in the whole country; everything about it went wrong, and would go wrong, in spite of him"(Irving, 467). This particular story shines a light on the struggles that the working class has to deal with. Rip was a nice guy, willing to help those around him but he was overwhelmed with the amount of work he had to do and just decided to give up. This is an eye opening tale about escapism and the hardships of life. This had the potential of shaping the American identity by opening up a conversation about mental health, helping your neighbor, not letting the struggles of life get to you and take you away from your family and the people that care about you.
