Descripción:

Jesuit missionaries spread Christianity in Japan, where many Daimyo converted to Christianity to establish trade and military alliances with Europeans. Tokugawa shoguns restricted European access to Japan because of concerns that Christianity might serve as a cultural bridge for alliances between the Daimyo and Europeans which would cause state decentralization and chaos. Therefore, Shoguns promulgated several decrees ordering a halt to Christian missions and also tortured or executed European missionaries who refused to leave or Japanese Christians who refused to renounce their faith. For example Christavao Ferreia who was Jesuit missionary renounced Christianity under tortue and proceeded to interrogate many Europeans.
