The National Transsexual Counseling Unit was founded after a riot at a 24-hour San Francisco cafeteria. Police were called on a group of rowdy transgender customers and become aggressive with one of them. In response, the transgender person throws hot coffee on the officer and a riot breaks out, known as Compton's Cafeteria Riot. The National Transsexual Counseling Unit is the first peer-run support group for transgender people in the world.
