Descripción:
In 2018, the "Secure Site for Research in Thanatology" was established in Bécancour, Quebec, by forensic scientist Shari Forbes, as part of the University of Quebec in Trois-Rivières. Renamed the Site de Recherche en Sciences Thanatologiques [Expérimentales et Sociales (REST[ES]), this facility is the first of its kind in Canada and focuses on studying human decomposition in the context of the country's colder, humid continental northern climate. The unique environmental conditions in Canada, including long, freezing winters and humid summers, significantly affect the decomposition process, making REST[ES] an essential site for advancing region-specific forensic knowledge. By examining natural decomposition in these settings, the facility bridges a critical gap in global forensic research, which had previously been dominated by studies in warmer climates.
REST[ES] plays a dual role in advancing forensic and social thanatology. Beyond its contributions to understanding decomposition rates and processes, it also facilitates research into the cultural, ethical, and social dimensions of death and body donation. This interdisciplinary approach enriches both forensic applications and societal perspectives on death-related practices. The researcg conducted at REST[ES] not only supports law enforcement and forensic investigators but also informs best practices for body donation programs and engages communities in meaningful conversations about death and science. By embracing both scientific and social aspects, REST[ES] hS positioned itself as a leader in comprehensive thanatological research.
