On December 7, 1941, Japan attacks the U.S. naval base at Pearl Harbor in Hawaii, bringing the United States into the war. The surprise attack destroys much of the U.S. Pacific Fleet, killing over 2,400 Americans, and prompts the U.S. to declare war on Japan. This event leads to the U.S. entering both the Pacific and European theatres of WWII.
