Germany invades Poland using blitzkrieg tactics, a rapid, coordinated assault of infantry, tanks, and airstrikes. In response, Britain and France declare war on Germany, marking the official start of World War II. Shortly thereafter, the Soviet Union invades Poland from the east, in accordance with the secret terms of the Nazi-Soviet Pact.
