1 feb 1642 año - Yakut Revolt
Descripción:
Siberia was home to 26 major ethnic groups that lived by hunting, trapping, fishing, or herding. Some groups readily accepted iron tooks, woven cloth, flour, tea and other products from the Russians in exchange for the skins of fur-bearing animals, but other groups resented the demand for tribute by Russian overlords and resisted encroachment. The Yakut people of Siberia mounted a rebellion and experienced cruel retribution for over 40 years. However, as violence and disease reduced native populations, the Russian government recognized that the importance of protecting the small peoples of Siberia. They also sponsored missionary groups to convert Siberian peoples to Orthodox Christianity but demonstrated less zeal when preaching because Siberian converts became excempt from fur taxes.
