Transcendentalism was the study of the admiration of "nature" which was similar to Romanticism. They were liberal Christians sect that emphasized rationality, reason and intellectualism. The main focus of Transcendentalism was individualism, idealism and divinity of nature

The word Transcendentalism means a spirituality that transcends the realm of rationality and the material world.

Transcendentalists believed that there should be a Utopian communal society, in which people help each other and there is no need for capitalism and wages.

The most famous people of this time were Ralph Waldo Emerson and Henry David Thoreau.

Causes:
- Created a debate between new lights and old lights, in which people in the era of Enlightenment believed that every decision should be based on mind but they added that both brain and heart should be balanced.
- A reaction to intellectualism.
- Focusing a lot on nature rather than cities.

Effects:
- Influencing movements for racial justice.
- Women's rights, and environmental protection in America.
