Noble Consort Mingxian (Tan Yuling) was not the main wife of the Xuantong Emperor (Puyi), but she held the position of his favored consort during his reign as the puppet emperor of Manchukuo. Their relationship was reportedly close, and her sudden and suspicious death in 1942, possibly orchestrated by the Japanese, left Puyi deeply saddened and distrustful of those around him.
