The Missouri Compromise admitted Missouri as a free state, and Maine as a slave state, with the purpose of maintaining the amount of free and slave states in the country. This contributed to the Civil War because while it did slow down the expansion of slavery, it swept the issue under the rug, which only built up the tension that led to the Civil War.
