13 ene 1588 año - 1588 - The Defeat of the Spanish Armada
Descripción:
War trigger: What triggered open war between Spain and England were two main things: England had engaged in piracy at the expense of the Spanish for over 20 years and the Queen of English (Elizabeth I) was a Protestant, which was something that really upset the Spanish King, Phillip II.
Armada: Phillip assembled the Spanish Armada in 1588; it consisted of 130 ships, 8,000 sailors and 18,000 soldiers. It was the greatest fleet in world history.
Defeat: The fleet sailed to England, intending to stop in the Netherlands first to gather more army, and then attack England and dethrone Queen Elizabeth II. They sailed through the English Channel, where they were ambushed at night by English ships that were set on fire, which disrupted the Spanish formation. As the English were attacking, the Spanish started to retreat; in doing it so, they came across a huge storm, which destroyed half its ships and killed almost half its men. This was a massive defeat, which set England as a naval supremacy.
North America exploration: this defeat allowed the English to start embarking on their own exploration of North America, without fear of the Spanish fleet.
