The Treaty of Alcáçovas-Toledo marked a significant turning point in the rivalry between Portugal and Castile over overseas territories. This treaty resolved disputes primarily concerning the Canary Islands, with Portugal recognizing Castile’s claims and renouncing any rights to the archipelago. In exchange, Castile acknowledged Portugal's sovereignty over territories discovered south of the islands.
