Gasoline Alley started in 1919 appealing to many right out of the gate. It mostly appealed to men in the earlier stages of the comic due to cars being involved in the comic. More and more people could relate to this comic as cars were becoming more affordable for middle class people. The creator then added a baby to appeal to females, all the sudden Gasoline Alley not only appealed to children and men. Which was unusual for a comic to appeal to everyone not just one audience at the time. The purpose of Gasoline Alley was to distract people from the war as it was in progress, and people needed something else to focus on rather than the tragedy. Because the army needed more people, the writers still had to remind people to fight for their country, so the writers had a part of the comic where one of the characters went to war to implore people to sign up for the army. This comic was not only relatable and impactful for war, but it was the first comic in which the characters aged which was a large change from what people were used to seeing in comics.
