En 1577, l’officier ottoman Mahmud Bey a mené depuis Tunis la conquête des oasis du Fezzan, un important carrefour commercial du Sahara central. Cette conquête a défié l’influence bornoane dans le Fezzan et les initiatives qu’Idrīs ibn ‘Alī avait entreprises en 1565.
