After Thomas had left to run his branch-line, the big engines had to shunt their own coaches and trucks. A turntable was used at each end of the line in order for them to turn around as it was unsafe for the tender engines to travel backwards at high speeds. One day, Gordon tries to use the turntable, but it is too windy and he is forced to pull his train slowly backwards. Thomas and James mock him for this at Elsbridge station. In contrast, James gets on the turntable with ease, but end up spinning like a top-hat out of control with Gordon watching it unfold. That night, the big engine hold an indignation meeting and decide to go on strike.
