The Healthy Start Scheme supports low income families with young children under the age of 4 to afford healthy foods like fruit, vegetables and milk. It gives eligible families a pre-paid card that they can use to spend on healthy foods and get access to free vitamins for the family. A volunteer from Citizens Advice Newcastle noticed that the uptake of this scheme among families in Newcastle was very low. There are often multiple barriers to this claiming support and so the team have created a messaging toolkit to promote the scheme with local families. Through Citizens Advice Newcastle's efforts of promoting this scheme to their clients in person and through local and social media, the uptake of the Healthy Start Scheme has increased from 68% to 78% in 2023.
