Descripción:
Citizens Advice Newcastle (CAN) was contacted by a daughter who had not been in contact with her elderly father since a quarrel five years prior. She visited him after being alerted by a neighbour and found both him and his home in a very poor condition. The house was dirty, the gas supply had been disconnected, the electricity was under threat of disconnection, and there were multiple other debts, including rent arrears. He was living on his old-age pension and blamed his ill health for his inability to get out and pay his bills.
CAN intervened by dealing with the creditors and making repayment arrangements on his behalf, resulting in the gas supply being reconnected. The client successfully claimed and received supplementary benefits, as well as a single payment for household goods, including a bed, bedding, a washing machine, and clothing. CAN also pursued his claim for mobility allowance.
Additionally, CAN contacted social services, who arranged for the client to be placed in a home while his house was cleaned and redecorated throughout. Upon his return, arrangements were made for him to receive meals on wheels and the services of a home help.
Unfortunately, during this time, he was diagnosed with terminal cancer and lived for another six months. However, his daughter, who allowed CAN to share this story, expressed her relief that he was able to spend the last months of his life in comfort instead of squalor and to pass away in his own home with dignity.
