When TAS was established in 1975, it was the only unit of its kind within the country’s Citizens Advice network. Over the years, similar units emerged nationwide, often drawing directly or indirectly on the expertise of the staff at Citizens Advice Newcastle (CAN), who have served as consultants and educators.

Based on the recommendation of National Citizens Advice, the BBC Panorama Team invited TAS to participate in a programme addressing the lack of legal aid for tribunal representation. The producers spent a day at the industrial tribunal in Newcastle, observing Maureen Taylor in action. Later that month, a film crew returned and, with the cooperation of a willing client, filmed in and around the Citizens Advice Newcastle offices. The programme generated widespread interest and led to inquiries from various parts of the country. Locally, it also attracted attention from Metro Radio's "Night-Owl" programme.
