In 1974, violence in marriage was the subject of a Parliamentary Committee, and Citizens Advice Newcastle (CAN) was asked to provide evidence to representatives of the committee when they visited Newcastle. Research conducted by CAN's legal assistance scheme over 6 months revealed that out of 379 people advised on matrimonial problems during that time, 73 alleged that they had been subjected to violence.
